Superhero Student Teacher! & Springtime Math Freebie!

I know I missed Wednesday's Pinterest Pick of the Week, but let me explain my Wednesday:

Wednesday, March 28th - 6:00am:

I woke up like every other morning.  Except I felt awful.  I haven't been feeling well all week (sinuses) but knew spring break was right around the corner (2 days now!) and so I figured I could hold out and make it through the week.  (I hate calling off work and I would rather wear a bag over my head than write sub plans or leave my kiddos to the wind.)

It took me forever to get ready because I kept having to lie down again.  An hour later, I left my house with my teaching bag and drove to work.

7:15am:    I can do it.  I can teach today.

....I'm copy-maker, desk fairy, counselor, keeper-of-the-recess games, and ruler of the whiteboard.  I'll surely make it.

If I can teach a child to read, my chances of teaching under the weather are pretty good.

8:00am:  I'll just put my head down on my desk for a minute....I feel dizzy.  Booting up my computer seems like an exhausting task.

8:15am:  I surrender to asking the office to call me a sub. I can deal with headaches and pain but now I'm nauseous and suddenly character traits, contractions, and kilograms do not mean much to me.

8:20am: Wait for it....

Superhero Student Teacher to the rescue!!!
Michelle is still student teaching in my building but is assigned to a kindergarten classroom.  The office called a sub for me but asked Michelle to teach my class. My kids were SO excited to see her again and I didn't have to write plans before I left.  They honestly did not really care if I was sick or not. They just cared that Mrs. H was back and were all smiles when they arrived. I loved it! She knows my kids, knows our routine, and knows the ins and outs of our room.  I was able to leave for the day and know my kiddos were in the best hands. :)

The rest of the day was boring.  I spent 2 hours at the Urgent Care, was prescribed a strong z-pack and slept the day away (literally - I slept from 11:30-5:00). I feel a ton better today and was back in the classroom, where character traits, contractions, and kilograms were still happily waiting for me.

To make up for not having a Pinterest Pick of the Week (I promise there will be one next week!), here is a freebie from my latest product, Springtime Story Problem Math Pack.  It comes with 15 story problem & work mat pages.  Each page takes your students through a step-by-step sequence of solving a story problem, all with cute springtime stories!

Remember, if you haven't entered my giveaway yet (a $25 Target or Amazon gift card!)
Giveaway ends Sunday, April 1st at 9:00pm.

I'm off to grade papers and get some more rest. :)

It's GIVEAWAY time!! 100+ TPT Followers

Today we started our final measurement unit.  We made Mr. (and Mrs.) Gallon Man (Woman) to help us remember how many cups, pints, and quarts are in a gallon. I told my kiddos: "Meet your new best friend this week: Gallon Man."  I heard one of my students, under his breath, say "He is one strange lookin' dude..."  They had a lot of fun with this and it really helps them convert measurements back and forth.

This is what I WISH our Gallon Man looked like:

But because it was Monday and I truly don't have a lot of patience for construction paper and glue...this is more like what our Gallon Men looked like...
Don't judge, people. My actual one looked a little better but since I forgot was too lazy to take out my camera today, this is my "paint" replica.  He looks awfully scary.  But this is why I teach reading.

Cinnamons and Antonyms, Happy Dance, & How-To Writing Unit!

Last night, I did a little happy dance in my living room.  I made the Top 100 Sellers list on TeachersPayTeachers! I was number 52 when I logged in.  YAY!!  I sold my first item on February 6th and I can't believe the whirlwind of excitement that has happened since then!  It's a wonderful feeling to know the materials you make for your own students are also making their way into other schools and students' lives!  :)  Keep reading for a little "celebration giveaway" at the end of my post.

We had a fun, amusing, merry, entertaining, and delightful time learning about synonyms and antonyms this week!  In fact, it was not the horrible, awful, terrible, painful, dreadful, and monstrous learning some of my kiddos thought it would be.

We played some interactive synonym and antonym games from GameGoo on the computers.

We also played Antonym Acting!  We acted out antonyms with some multi-sensory learning. I said a word such as happy, and they would have to then "act out" the antonym of the word.  They loved this! We acted out the antonyms for words such as fast, catch, hot, mean, tired, and go.

Then we made Synonym Buns!!   I found this idea through Jordon's blog, Life is Better Messy Anyways.  Each student was given a different word and looked up synonyms for the word from the thesaurus.  They were so surprised to see how many synonyms they found for their words.

We shared our new and interesting words with each other as our *real* "synonym buns" were baking!  Yum!  It was a great treat to eat after we took our synonym/antonym assessment.

At the end of the day, we do a recap on what we learned.  When I asked them what their favorite part was, they told me "cinnamons and antonyms!"  Me: "No, no, it's syn-no-nyms." Kiddos: "Ohh...cin-o-mins."   Haha, I think we'll review pronunciation keys next week. :)

"Mini-Giveaway Celebration"

This past week, I posted my latest TPT item, "A How-To Writing Unit for Kids!"  It has all the materials you will need to make some fun, hands-on projects: a PBJ sandwich and a S'more!  Each activity comes with a complete set of picture sequencing cards for independent or whole-class work.  It also includes additional expository writing activity pages, rubrics, differentiated planning pages and final copy templates, a class book cover for students to write about their own "how-to" topics, a poster, enlarged transition word cards, and individual student charts for transition words.

Here's "How-To" win this unit:
I usually give my new units out to the first 5 followers who post a comment.  But in celebration of being on the Top 100 Sellers list this week, I'm giving this unit free to first *15* followers who leave me a comment with their e-mail address. Yay! :)
Catch: You must include some synonyms and antonyms in your comment. ;) Have fun!

Meet My New Friend! & Pinterest Pick of the Week!

In the midst of teaching, coaching, church life group, wedding planning, blogging & TPT, Zumba classes, and more teaching...I always make time for friends and family!  They come first, always!  My friends and family are so great at keeping me grounded.  (I have a tendency to spiral out into 20 different projects at once in an attempt to help people and have a hard time saying no to everyone. Call it my spiritual gift...or insanity. Either would be correct.)

So in the midst of everything, I was asked to teach a workshop on blogging for the Tri-County Computer Services Association.  In my area, they are kind of like each district's go-to when it comes to professional development, e-mail and computer services, networks, etc.  When I got the e-mail about a month ago I was really surprised.

Me?! But I only have 100 followers...And I don't really know what I'm doing...And I have to google everything I do.  I kind of started this as a "let's see what happens" adventure.

Teach others how to blog?

 Um..okay.

Sure.

Of course I will teach a workshop.  You got it.

Oh.My.Goodness.  I'm super nervous!  So I was thrilled when my new friend Rachel, who I will be teaching first grade with next year, came to me and asked me to teach her some things about blogging.  Yes! Someone to practice on!  This is what I needed!  I feel pretty confident after helping her that I can do this workshop.  Piece of cake. :)

We have had so much fun putting her blog together!  She's SO sweet and enthusiastic about teaching!  I can't wait to work with her next year. Please be awesome and go and visit her blog to share some "bloggy-kindness" by becoming one of her followers!  I know she will love it and she has an adorable literacy circle pack that she is giving away to her first 15 followers.  Grab it! It's really practical and cute!
Head on over and visit Rachel from A-B-Seymour!

Now for Wednesday's Pinterest Pick of the Week!

Build Words with Legos?!

It doesn't get much cooler than this for the boys in your classroom!
I'm thinking: contractions, compound words, letters on the Legos to build spelling words, mixed-up sentences to rearrange, etc.  I am definitely going to be purchasing myself some Legos this summer!  Fun, fun, fun!

That's it for tonight. :) Tomorrow is our 2nd Grade Music program.  They will be so cute!  But, it makes for one long day and evening.  I'm headed to bed after I watch the latest episode of Dance Moms.

Happy Learning!

Hoppy Easter Pack, Fundations, & Wedding Shoes!

I usually flip on my computer and get a ton of work done while I watch The Bachelor every Monday night.  I hate the show but for some reason, look forward to it every Monday. There seems to be nothing great on Monday television now.  Does anyone have a Monday night recommendation that could become my newest "Monday-work-night show?"

I posted my latest writing pack to TPT on Sunday.  I think it turned out really cute.  It has a lot of creative writing prompts, some thinking maps (nonfiction and fiction), a KWL chart, shape poem, and an Easter classroom meeting page.  Here's a preview -

I'll send this "Hoppy Easter" writing pack to the first 5 followers to leave a comment and e-mail address. :)

I'd been going back and forth between wanting a pair of purple heels or ivory heels for my wedding shoes.  I found these purple sparkly heels and fell in love!!  They look a lot better in person...they are really sparkly when they're on.  What do you think?!  :)  It's so hard to leave them in the box...they really want me to wear them...  They've told me.

This has nothing to do with education (but then again neither does purple sparkly heels) but I need to post a picture of my little Weston.  Every afternoon for the past couple of weeks, my students have packed up quickly and quietly at the end of the day to hear a story I make up new story about him getting in trouble.  They just love him! (And I don't mind the new & improved pack-up routine!)

Finally, does anyone out there use the Fundations spelling and phonics program?  It is based off of Wilson Reading.  I honestly really enjoy the program.  I have seen a great amount of improvement in my students' spelling this year  - but, after using it day after day, my students are a bit sick of using a whiteboard, magnetic board, and notebook over and over again.  (and over and over again...)

I've been playing around with the idea of creating some resources/activities to go with it.  I know that is probably w-a-y against the program in some way. (The program even discourages the use of a Smart Board due to it being "distracting" for kids.)  That's fine, but my kids are at the point right now where no matter how funny my stand-up phonics comedy-act is, it is spring and they need something new - even if it's just to use on Fridays to mix things up.  (Shh..don't tell the Fundations Police. I promise I'll still follow their complete plan!)  If you use Fundations, let me know and I would love to brainstorm with you or see what kind of resources you could use in your classroom! :)

Thanks for letting me go on that little rampage.  That is why I adore all of you!  I'm off to do a little planning for next week.  My class will be starting The Chocolate Touch after spring break and I'm so excited!  I have Mrs. Bainbridge's "sweet" unit to use! :)

Easter Freebie & QCB Box

Class Meetings are really big at my school.  Each teacher is required to hold a class meeting at least once a month in his or her classroom.  In each classroom is a QCB box, which stands for Questions/Comment Box.  Students can anonymously drop notes into the QCB box about something that is worrying them, bothering them, or something they need to talk about within our classroom.  It is often about a friend or about something happening on the playground.  We spend a lot of time discussing the difference between tattling and telling in second grade.

I love the box because teachers are able to go through it and see what is going through our students' minds.  I have learned a great deal from this box over the past two years and have been able to use this knowledge to better our classroom environment.  I encourage you to give this a try if you do not have a current way of giving your students an "outlet" to express thoughts or feelings anonymously about school and home.   You will be amazed at what you learn! :)

This Friday, we held a class meeting about differences in my room.  We discussed how everyone is different and unique.  We talked about ways to make others feel welcome and how to treat everyone equally, even if they don't always look like us or act like us.

I'm working on an Easter Writing Pack.  In it, I included an activity sheet that teachers could use in class meetings or just as an easy self-esteem boost for your kiddos.  Here's the freebie for you to grab.  :) I hope you enjoy!  I'm making this post short and sweet today because it is beautiful outside!! I'm headed out to enjoy the weather.

Vocabulary Parade!, Heather's Patience & Wednesday's Pinterest Pick of the Week - on Thursday :)

It's Thursday night and I'm just now putting up my Wednesday Pinterest Pick of the Week.  I had a rather frustrating day yesterday.  I felt out of sorts with my kids.  Or, my kids were out of sorts with craziness and this early warm weather.  Either way, it took all the energy I had to give my usual calm reminder of expectations as I watched an eraser top fly across the classroom.

Spring break...Are you there?  It's me, Christina.

Thankfully, I am an avid follower of Heather's blog over at Heather's Heart.  She is just about the sweetest, most caring teacher I have had the chance to meet in "blog world."  As if it was a message from above, she wrote a beautiful post yesterday about patience.  In her post, she talks about a book she uses (which has immediately gone on my must-read list) and  posted a poem for teachers.  Please head over to her blog and check this out.  You will love it!

This morning, I prayed for more patience on my way to work...and my kiddos and I were back to normal today- laughing and learning and keeping eraser tops on the top of our pencils.  :)

I found this hall pass picture on Pinterest and had to share.  It definitely gave me a little laugh. :)

In other parts of my little second grade world, I fished out my April/May folders to plan ahead a bit.  Every year, I do a Vocabulary Parade with my kids.  All year, we keep a vocabulary notebook.  We learn about, write down, define, and illustrate a word at the end of each day.

In May, I assign each child a word from our notebook.  They then have to "dress up" to show the meaning of their word.  We parade around the school through classrooms to share our vocabulary words and costumes with everyone.  It is so much fun and the kids really get into it!  Plus, it's an excellent way for us to review key words at the end of the year.  Here are some pictures of last year's class.

                           Precipitation

                           Length

              hideous, length, marsh

Tomorrow is jean day - yay! I also get to meet with my florist tomorrow to discuss the flowers.  I am not the kind of girl to have a "favorite flower" nor have I dreamed of what the flowers would look like on my wedding day.  I have only two requirements: 1) They are not dead or dying.  2) They are not the annoyingly tall centerpieces I've seen at weddings lately. If I wanted to play hide and seek with my friends and family at the reception tables, I would have invited them to a picnic.    :)

Off to bed.  I hope everyone has a *fabulous* Friday!

"We can just in-frense-er it" Or...infer ;)

We have been making inferences for the past couple of weeks in my classroom.  This is a tough skill for my second grade sweeties.  Today, we gathered at the carpet for our strategy mini-lesson.  I asked my kids, "Who can raise their hand and tell me what it means to use what we know AND the clues the author gives us to figure out more in a book?"  One little kiddo raised his hand, and in a matter-of-fact tone of voice replied,

"We can just in-frense-er it."

Ahh...we can infer.  :)

We had SO much fun using Babbling Abby's Snow Day Inference Investigation unit.  I just had to give it a huge shout-out tonight because she did a fab job on this activity! You can find it on her TeachersPayTeachers store.  Let me just tell you, it is a purchase you will not regret. :)

The unit takes a mystery story about a young boy's snow day and requires the students to infer what he did all day with his Grandma using clues from the text and "evidence" from the mystery.
We started by building our prior knowledge about things we can do on a snow day.

In small groups, we gathered the "evidence" and made inferences about what the boy did during his snow day.

After we gathered all of our clues together, we created a timeline to infer what Tim did during the day, in what order he did it in, and what time he did it at!
This was challenging for my students - they loved it!

After we "solved the mystery" we wrapped up our inference unit with an Inference Strategy Song.  I tried to blow this picture up so you can see the words.  It's a fun song to use with your kids! :)

Before you know it, all of your students will be in-frense-er's.  :)

I also wanted to post Debbie's Linky Party from Kreative in Kinder that is really touching my heart!  Click the picture below to head over to Debbie's blog and link up to give and share teaching resources or TPT units you may have -  whatever you can help with, to show support for the many teachers and schools who lost everything in the midst of all of the tornado destruction that hit the U.S. last week.
Can you imagine standing in front of your group of students tomorrow, not having any materials or resources to teach with, and losing everything in your room?  I hope you can reach out and help!  I will be sending my TPT units to Debbie when she sends out her e-mail next week.
Link up and reach out! :)  I really believe that is what these teaching blogs are all about - teachers taking care of teachers. :)

I'm off to bed in hopes of getting to work early to get some odds and ends done in the morning.

Big News!! What would you do?! A Thank You, and New Unit Giveaway

I won my first blog giveaway! Yay!! 17 lucky winners were chosen from Kelli's Castles and Crayons blog to win all of her TPT unit packs! Thank you, Kelli! I am so excited - she has some awesome creations and I can't wait to use them - in my first grade classroom next year!

Yes, you read that correctly.  I'm moving back to first grade next year!  I'm SO beyond-over-the-moon excited to go back.  I did both student teaching and my urban literacy block in first grade during college, and then God blessed me with a first grade teaching contract a week before I walked across the stage for graduation.  I immediately fell in love with the age level.  There is nothing quite like watching a first grade child blossom in their reading skills.  I would imagine it would be  hard to really grasp if you haven't taught first grade before.  In EVERY grade, students make great growth.  But in first grade, it is somewhat of a more dramatic change that can be seen at any point in the school year.    I. Love. It.

Don't get me wrong, I had so much fun teaching second grade.  The content is great and they are more independent.  I also really love creating material for second grade, and I don't think that's something I will change - It will be fun to be able to create things for both first and second grade now.

However, as someone new to the teacher-blogging world, I'm worried because everyone says not to change your name once you've started your "brand."  I'm beyond thrilled with the success of my TPT store and I don't want people to be confused, or lose my followers.  I was thinking of slowly making the change to just First Grade Sugar and Spice - what do you think? What would you do to your blog if you were me?  (I won't really do anything until next fall.)  I need some advice! :)

So, while you ponder  over my newest dilemma, I wanted to share with you my newest unit on TeachersPayTeachers.  Weather!  This learning unit is jam-packed with 35 pages of weather activities.  It comes with 12 learning posters and over 15 activities, printables, and experiments. I had so much fun making it!  Check it out at my TPT store or in my Teachers Notebook shop.

*updated* This week I'll give my new unit away for free to the first TEN followers who leave a comment! (I asked a wedding question last night and just realized I've already done that before.  I'll make it up by giving this out to 5 extra people!) :)
Remember to leave your e-mail address! :)

Sneak Peek Freebie & St. Patrick's Day Word Work Pack

The weather unit I've done in the past was kind of boring so I've been obsessing  working on a new weather unit to use with my kids.  It's taking me f-o-r-e-v-e-r! (But I'm really excited about it!) I actually feel horrible because someone on TPT asked me to put a weather unit up.  I told her I would try my hardest to get it up by the beginning of the week....well, that was last week, folks. Oops.  Life got in the way and well, you know how that goes! If you are out there somewhere in blog/internet world - I'm very sorry! Here is a sneak peek freebie of my weather unit.  It includes lots and lots of posters, printables, activities, and experiments to use with your little meteorologists.  I'm hoping to have it up on TPT by mid-week! :)

Grab this freebie to add to your end of the year/summer activities. :)  Enjoy!

Since St. Patrick's Day is right around the corner, I added a St. Patrick's Day Word Work pack to TPT last week. You can grab a copy of it on TPT here.  It is also posted on my Teachers Notebook shop and was a featured item in the newsletter that went out today. Yay! :) It goes along with the freebies I shared in my last post.  Remember, this pack goes with First Grade Common Core Standards (Why am I making first grade stuff?...hmm...I may have some news to share with you all later this week!! :)  It would be great, however, for struggling second graders who need some extra practice in word work.

As always, I will send this Word Work pack FREE to the first 5 followers who leave a comment and post their e-mail address. :)

Since it's Saturday, I'm off to enjoy a wonderful movie and dinner date with my fiance for the first time in weeks!  I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Pinterest Pick of the Week, Freebie, & Daydreaming

When warmer weather is around the corner, most people start to think of spring cleaning and the many things on their to-do lists for their yards.  Right around March, my mind always starts to drift to....next school year.  It is about this time every year when I take a good hard look at what is going on in my classroom.  What is going well? What is not going so well? What needs tweaked and changed? What needs completely revamped?  And - the fun part - what will my classroom theme be next year?!?!

I start daydreaming, people.  My sticky notes become so scattered with thoughts, ideas, and to-do lists that I can't find my desk anymore.  My students begin to think I'm going crazy by changing little things so I can "try them out" for the fall with next year's students.

Enter Pinterest.

This year, unlike the past, I have boards to search, pictures to pin, pictures to repin, and
Oh My Gosh I am addicted!  I don't think I'll ever be able to choose a theme.

So, for Wednesday's Pinterest Pick of the Week, I found a super cute classroom picture that I had to share.

Check out this reading table!  SO fun!  Wouldn't you just love to read with your teacher at a table like this?

This almost makes me want to do a Hawaiian theme, but I am contemplating the idea of an Amusement Park Theme - What do you think?!

I have to share this brilliant little idea, as well.  Check out how this teacher used salt shakers to organize and keep her glitter tidy? Great idea!  Mine are always spilling everywhere.

Before I head off to bed, I posted a St. Patrick's Day Word Work Pack on my TPT store last night.  I'll post more about it tomorrow, but I wanted to share a couple freebies from the pack with you tonight.  This learning pack is geared toward first grade common core standards, but I know many struggling second graders could use this practice, as well! :)

Click on the picture to download the freebies.

Here is a practice page on identifying letters and sounds within a word.
Hats Off to Digraphs! (Identify the digraphs by following the color code.)

Enjoy!  After I stop stalking searching Pinterest for more ideas...I may finally fall asleep.  :)

Weekend Rewind & Blog Award-Catch Up Time

What a weekend! The State competition was on Sunday so I spent the weekend in Columbus with my cheer squad. We had SO much fun!  On Saturday the girls went shopping, swam in the indoor pool at the hotel, and we went to Cheesecake Factory for dinner (yum!). Later that night, we practiced our routine and had some team building.  My district has a large sub-group of "economically disadvantaged" students. It was so nice for these girls to enjoy a weekend of new experiences outside of their community.  A couple of the girls commented that they had never been to a nice restaurant like that.  I immediately thought of how much I take for granted in my life.  It was a message that went straight to my heart and reminded me that we need to be thankful for what we have and blessed we have so much - and in turn, make sure we share those blessings with others.

On Sunday, the girls took 15th place, beating out only one squad - but, for their very first time competing, it was definitely an honor to have even made it that far.  I was a happy coach!
Now that cheerleading is over for awhile, I get to go back to being just a teacher again. Yayy! I'm so happy to have some extra time to create and work in my classroom.  (I feel so guilty rushing off to practice at 3:30...I always feel like I want to put a sign on my door that says "I am not leaving to go home right at 3:30...I am off to coach and will then spend time at home working on school things at night. Please don't think I'm a slacker."  Haha.

Over the busy weekend, I was awarded two blog awards by some awesome followers!
